Digital Surrealism Assignment

DIGITAL SURREALISM

In the past, present and the future, there was probably one moment where you hate yourself, you think that you are worthless or you want to be someone else because you aren’t “good enough”. Leaning towards a darker message, I decided to focus on one main quote, “you are your own enemy” and then branch off from the idea for my digital surrealism. I wanted to do something related to high school so that people that see my art will be able to understand easier and even connect with it. Looking at my digital surrealism, you can see that the atmosphere overall is very eerie and lonely, with silhouettes of students walking throughout the black and white hallway; the main character/focus of the art stand out which emphasizes that you are important because there is only one you out there. The human body is slowly fading at the end which shows that whenever you hate yourself you feel like just disappearing in the crowd. The darker side begin if you look closely at the image, the person is made out of crumbled paper representing scars and hurt feelings, while the human’s expression is blank, they aren’t thinking of anything because they feel empty. On the face, the paper mouth is ripped and nothing is there except for darkness which expresses how the person doesn’t like to talk because they get shy and anxious wondering if the anyone would reply to them if they spoke. For me, the main aspect of the body is the heart. The heart is ripped open and inside is pitch black with subtle images of your own hands tearing and tugging on your heart, which shows the main message, “you are your own enemy”.
At first I was going to go with a very complicated idea which was about suicide, however I noticed that there would be a lot of editing including and the process would take too loon so after going through a lot more thinking and sketching I end up with this artwork. From broken inner kid (everyone has their pure and innocent side which is what I call inner kid side) to suicidal, to how bullies also have their problems, to transgender and lastly, the design I went with, how “you are your own enemy” I started off with just shoulders and the heart was being tugged and ripped by hands coming out of the shirt however I thought it was kind of boring so as I gave more thought to the idea more design came up. My final design was that the human is made out of paper and is cut off halfway, slowly fading away. There were tears in some parts and the heart being torn apart was shown through the destroyed paper with darkness surrounding the object.
The technical part in general was really frustrating and complicated for me. It was hard to get used to all the hot keys and tools and there were too many techniques that I don’t even know existed in Photoshop but after playing around for around three days, I got the hang of it however it took too long. The paper body was no problem, I took a photo of my friend, got a photo of a crumbled piece of paper, and then I cut off the crumbled piece of paper leaving the body outline only, which was done by lowering the opacity of the body so that it is transparent enough for me to select, using the quick select tool, the unimportant stuff. After I got my base done, I went to create a ripped effect on the mouth and heart area. Once again using the quick select tool I deleted all the unnecessary white from the images and just changed the darkness with the level layer. I created a mask of the human and use the gradient tool to add a fading away type of look. The hardest part in my perspective was combining the hands so that it looks like it was tearing up the heart. I did the usual and delete the unwanted parts and then I put the heart image in the area where it was supposed to be, but the hands were out of the torn paper and the heart looks as if it was from somewhere; the two didn’t blend well which was the main problem. Instead of being able to see the heart and hands clearly, I made the inside look very dark using the level layer, making sure it was enough so that people can still see the image. I was going to just go with a trash can and finish the project but it looked weird so I changed my plans and created a school hallway with silhouettes of students walking since leaving just the body alone would be plain. I got rid of the unwanted parts and added a level layer to the silhouettes I found on the internet. I accidentally moved the level layer but that accident made the silhouettes look better than just the colour black so I went with that technique for my background. My ideas were shifted a lot there weren’t many changes in my original design however there were a lot of additional ideas.
While completing this project, I was able to absorb a lot of information about Photoshop and getting actual legal pictures online. I’m more of a hands-on type of person so playing around with the tools in Photoshop was the best and fastest way I learnt.  Unlike my past self I actually understand a few of the tools in Photoshop and look forward to the future learning. To be honest I heard about legal and illegal pictures online but I never really touched on it till now. It was kind of annoying making sure the images were allowed by the people to use it, even though anything that goes on the internet is already for the public but at least now I understand how to get legal pictures. I’m never really 100% satisfied with any work I’ve done because I always think that I could have done better and for this project it still applies. I really like the background and the human individually but together, they don’t blend and looks a little bit uneven. If I had known more about Photoshop I would have had more time and somehow combine the two together.

11 years old Samantha Metcalfe and Cailyn Degrandpre throat sings during Justin Trudeau's ceremony.

Inuit throat singers were invited to perform during Justin Trudeau's swearing-in ceremony for the first time. After learning more about the aboriginal's culture and their history I think it was a very loving and honourable moment. The aboriginal people that have been ignored for years are finally getting more attention and people are starting to appreciate them. Although the process may be slow, at least everything is changing.

The performance was breath taking, I seriously don't know how on earth to sing like that. Singing from your throat takes a lot of talent and I thought it was very interesting. It's great that kids are performing so that the kids, the future will have more experience and would treasure the memories.

Photo Scavenger Hunt - Composition

Composition: Depth Linear Perspective
Tool: Adobe Photoshop CS6 (crop tool, levels)
Definition: Depth linear perspective is when parallel lines
appear to intersect at some point in the distance.
The intersecting point is called the "Vanishing Point".
Why I Chose the Photo: In the picture you can see that the walls and the lines of the floor tile eventually become smaller, and their distance shrinks as the picture goes further. There is a noticeable vanishing point at the door, where everything ends there.

Composition: Asymmetrical Balance
Tool: Adobe Photoshop CS6 (crop tool, levels)
Definition: Asymmetrical Balance is when the photo is not equal on both side (one side seem heavier than the other)
Why I Chose the Photo: In the picture on both side everything seems balanced
but the bulletin board on the right gives it more weight than the other side therefore it is an asymmetrical balance.

Composition: Depth Overlapping
Tool: None
Definition: Depth overlapping is when objects go over another to create depth.
Why I Chose the Photo: In the picture you can see the main focus is a locker that is in between in a line of lockers beside one another. There is a clear foreground that had been blur on purpose and middle ground with the line of lockers as the background in the back.

Composition: Rule of Thirds
Tool: Adobe Photoshop CS6 (crop tool, levels, curves)
Definition: Rule of thirds is when a photo is divided into thirds with two imaginary lines vertically and two horizontally. This creates three columns, three rows and nine section in the photo. Rule of thirds is basically the photo that is taken using the imaginary grid to space out the image.
Why I Chose the Photo: If you cut the picture into equal lines of two vertically and horizontally, you can see that the main focus in the photo is placed between the lines leaning to the center right of the image.

Composition: Human-made Framing
Tool: Adobe Photoshop CS6 (crop tool, levels, curves)
Definition: Human-made framing is when something that is human-made wraps around the main object as a border which then directs the audience's eyes into the main focus more.
Why I Chose the Photo: In the picture you can see that the glass surrounds the person as an outline or border which makes the person pop out a lot more.

Composition: Intentional Blur
Tool: Adobe Photoshop CS6 (crop tool, levels)
Definition: Intentional blur is when fast moving objects are blurred on purpose to create a moving effect.
Why I Chose the Photo: In the picture you can see that the person is spinning and is blurred while the background is still.

Composition: Leading Lines
Tool: Adobe Photoshop CS6 (crop tool, levels, curves)
Definition: Leading lines is when lines natural or not is used to direct a person's eye to the main focus of the photo.
Why I Chose the Photo: In the picture you can see that the fence has lines that points straight to the person.

Composition: Selective Focus
Tool: Adobe Photoshop CS6 (crop tool, levels)
Definition: Selective focus is when an image has an object with all the spotlight on it while the background and other things surrounding the object is blurred out.
Why I Chose the Photo: In this picture you can see that the lock is focused while everything around it is blurred out.

Composition: Breaking Pattern
Tool: Adobe Photoshop CS6 (crop tool, levels)
Definition: Breaking pattern is when an object (design, etc.) is repeated but then there is something in the way that breaks the pattern.
Why I Chose the Photo: In this picture you can see that the books are the same looking, straight and tall but there is one book that is sticking out and is shorter than the rest breaking the unison.

Composition: Form
Tool: Adobe Photoshop CS6 (crop tool)
Definition: Form is when the object is a form (a 3-dimensional shape)
Why I Chose the Photo: In this picture you can see that textures and shade of the 3-D foot which is a form.

ABORIGINAL ART ANALYSIS

Androgyny is the name of one in many beautiful paintings by the famous Ojibwa artist, Norval Morrisseau. Created in 1983, the artwork is 366cm x 610cm in size. Like all of his other works, he painted using mostly acrylic for this one too. Androgyny is filled with natural aspects resulting to a very busy and compact effect. There is a hill right on the bottom center with a hole inside filled with fish swimming to the left. While, the hill itself has a lot of animals that are connected with thin lines and a human lying against the tunnel. A snake's tail is seen half wrapped around the human’s head. However the snake’s head was faced to the center of the painting, poking halfway out of the hill.

On top of the hill, there are three humans on each side of the painting walking to the middle. Following the humans, there are ducks, and bird type creatures. Surrounding the animals there are colourful butterflies and flowers, mostly pink, red, blue and orange to create a busier feel to the artwork. A hole appears in the middle center, which is right on top of the bottom tunnel. In the center a big eagle with its wings out flying, is painted there. The eagle is made up with blue and red colours, which contrast with the yellow background and once again the lines, are very squiggly but smooth. Humans stood underneath the eagle and were painted brown with red circles floating in the air, specifically in the eagle’s hole. The painting overall caught my eye because of the bright contrast and unique choice of colours.

The very first thing that drew my attention when looking at the picture was of course the eagle in the center. All of the animals, humans, butterflies, flowers and etc. were headed to the center where the eagle was. Lines and shapes were almost as if it was directly pointing your eyes to the image, making it clear to look in the middle where all of the others were heading. Not only did the lines and shapes guide the eyes, this artist made the rest of the picture busy while he left the middle a lot less busy to pull the eye to the middle. Using a brighter yellow for the background of the eagle also helped with the guide, I'm sure that most of the people who had seen this art would have looked at the eagle first and I must say the artist did a great job projecting people to the main character of the painting.

Looking at this art, I see it as people, animals, plants and basically everything on earth is bowing down to the ruler or creator. They are shown to be very focused on the eagle, paying close attention while the big bird is in the air spreading its wings majestically stating that it is in a higher ranking than the others. This is most likely a representation of life, the world’s ruler that connects everyone and everything together. The artist went with a very natural way of presenting the art adding more effect to what I think the meaning is behind this piece of painting. Since I had done some research about the eagle and aboriginal people, the eagle represented love and is known to be the closest to communicate with the creator because eagles can fly up the highest. I think the artist is trying to get the audience to interpret the painting this way. However this is just my way of seeing the art, many others have different perspective like this artwork may mean something else, with a whole different meaning to it.

At first glance I would describe this artwork as a busy piece of art, but taking a closer look I think the painting gives off a happy, positive and united feeling. The artwork overall is very detailed and there are many hidden messages making it something inspirational. I really like inspiring or any art with a deep meaning behind it. It gives off something even more special when there's a hidden important lesson in the artwork, which this painting has. All in all, I feel really attracted to the united and feeling as if everything is together as one in the painting.
